Doherty "THE IMPROPER BOSTONIAN"

Like the Red Sox, Baked Beans, and Faneuil Hall; Dick Doherty is Boston. For more than forty years, Bostonians have been in love with the multi-faceted Doherty and the feeling has always been mutual.

Doherty's comedy brings out the child within each and every one of us while his smile calls out the little devil in us all. His life's story is one of highs and lows, of human foibles set against a backdrop of undeniable grit and determination.

Dick Doherty began his career in the early 1960's as a folk singer and happy-hour performer and it was from that platform that he forged an impressive career spanning two decades. At various times throughout his musical career he embodied the roles of rock singer, pop singer, and even blue-eyed soul singer.

What truly set Dick Doherty apart from the thousands of other musical acts performing around the country, however, was his ability to interact with the audience between songs. Right from the very beginning, comedy made up a significant piece of Doherty's performances. With enviable ease he rattled off one-liners about himself, his fans, and life in general while the audience hung on every word. Ticket holders expecting to attend a concert, instead found themselves at an event. People walked into Dick Doherty concerts, but at the end of the show fans walked out.

His celebration of his "right to be" became a celebration of each individual's selfsame right and the audience treasured the gift. Anyone that has enjoyed an evening with Dick Doherty, aptly known as the "Improper Bostonian," has, in actuality, enjoyed an evening with themselves. That is Doherty's secret; that is his gift.

Music was an important foundation, enabling Doherty to present his comedic talents in a wide variety of forums long before the advent of comedy clubs. These days, Doherty has purified and has stripped his performance down to its basic core; "The Stand-up Comedian Dick Doherty."

The road from there to here was not an easy one. In 1983 Dick Doherty woke up broke and ruined in a drug rehabilitation hospital in Rhode Island. He was treated for alcohol and cocaine addiction and now has more than twenty years of sobriety.

Assuming that his career had been lost forever, Doherty sold "The Cape Cod Comedy Club" formerly Dick Doherty's Crystal Palace in Hyannis, the infamous club that he had owned and operated for 15 years. Doherty returned to college in 1984 to study Substance Abuse and Dysfunctional Family Counseling.

It was while working at a free clinic in the Boston's North End that some old friends and fans stumbled upon him. They encouraged him to reclaim his place in the spotlight. Eventually he was convinced.

Dick Doherty's BeanTown Comedy Vault opened in 1987, to the absolute delight of thousands of Bostonians. Conveniently located right next to the Beautiful Boston Commons and downstairs from Remington's Eating & Drinking Exchange, Doherty's new club was an instant hit. The Vault, with an ambiance, charm, and intimacy unlike any other room in New England, was the perfect venue to show off Doherty's formidable and disarming comedic talents. He had risen from the ashes and was re-discovered by countless fans while, at the same time, a whole new crop of club goers were able to experience him for the first time.

Boston had once again thrown its arms around Dick Doherty. Little did he know that he was soon to go national for the second time in his life.

Bud Friedman, legendary comedy club innovator and owner of the world famous Improvisation Comedy Clubs happened to be in Boston on business early in 1990. To his surprise he saw a small ad for his old friend's Comedy Vault. Having been a longtime fan, Friedman got in touch with Doherty and immediately planted the seed for a national comeback tour.

Dick Doherty was happy playing it safe in Boston, but after years of Friedman's friendly prodding, the Godfather of Boston Comedy finally made his long awaited return to the national comedy scene with a headlining stint at Resorts International Hotel in Atlantic City.

Since then he has crisscrossed the country and the world, including three sold-out shows at The Hong Kong Convention Center in China.

Today, many years and miles away from his happy-hour origins, Dick Doherty is having the best time of his life and is truly the epicenter of the New England Comedy scene with three of the finest comedy clubs in the area: Dick Doherty's BeanTown Comedy Escapes in Lowell and in Boston, Massachusetts and in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

In just a few short years, Dick Doherty is again at the top of his game and the industry working every major comedy club in New England, often times even those directly competing with his own clubs. So respected is his position within the New England comedy community the Boston Herald dubbed him as "the Godfather of Boston Comedy."
